The goal of this thesis was to broaden the vocabulary of contemporary furniture design by analyzing the objects and spaces used by street vendors in Mumbai, India, through the lens of deconstruction theory.

	From the Industrial Revolution, to Ford’s assembly line, to the late-stages of capitalism we find ourselves in, design and production have been increasingly restricted by convention and more increasingly,  by the limitations of the processes of production.

Homogeneity— the idea that goods of the same type are interchangeable and they have the same value and characteristics— dictates how manufacturers and consumers interact with mass-produced goods.



	Through Jacques Derrida’s process of deconstruction, the objects of the collection are given form based on their own terms and provide an outlook on what furniture could look like if not constrained by the limits of mainstream-production.

 In the seeming chaos of this “un-system”, through the analysis of a broad cross section of the innumerable typologies and configurations a common “language” begins to surface.  In order to analyze the  language of these objects and spaces, the idea of Différance— a key aspect of deconstruction theory— was adopted. Différance, meaning both a difference and an act of deferring, says one should analyze the binaries inherent to the language-system.

 The collection explores a coalescence of these seemingly binary principles and their relationships. Although the pieces appear disparate and quirky, they share a subtle dialogue through materiality, processes and ideas

The first object explores the binary of intended and appropriated use.

The piece was envisioned as a single form that can serve dual functions, each aiding the other.


When oriented vertically, each individual profile dictates how that particular shelf is used, drawing from the specific ways in which street vendors store and display individual items.The form can be re-oriented when required to serve as a bench, with a floating panel to hold objects.

This second piece explored the binary of mobile and stationary objects, interpreted as the most rudimentary form of seating, the stool. 

In the upright orientation the five casters hitting the ground work against each other and the volume sits extremely stable, and functions as a stool.

On tugging the chain, the stool tips over and is made mobile as only three of the fifteen wheels make contact with the ground.
 The handle is housed in a cedar wood volume that ties the mobile object to the space it occupies and questions further the idea of mobility and staticity.

The third object explores the binary of massive and lightweight elements.A vinyl mesh, a surface that through its translucency only alludes to material, was held in tension by a massive cedar wood volume.  The lightweight and massive elements each depend on each other in the relationship between suspension and tension, playing with the manner in which this relationship exists within the objects and spaces of the vendors.The volume holding the whole structure down in tension is the same as the one that has been hollowed out from the central shelf, playing with the idea of mass and voids.

Several other pieces at different scales explore more loosely, the facets of the language we are trying to understand.

The goal of this thesis was to broaden the vocabulary of contemporary furniture design by analyzing the objects and spaces used by street vendors in Mumbai, India, through the lens of deconstruction theory.

From the Industrial Revolution, to Ford’s assembly line, to the late-stages of capitalism we find ourselves in, design and production have been increasingly restricted by convention and more increasingly, by the limitations of the processes of production.

Homogeneity— the idea that goods of the same type are interchangeable and they have the same value and characteristics— dictates how manufacturers and consumers interact with mass-produced goods
	


	


Through Jacques Derrida’s process of deconstruction, the objects of the collection are given form based on their own terms and provide an outlook on what furniture could look like if not constrained by the limits of mainstream-production.

In the seeming chaos of this “un-system”, through the analysis of a broad cross section of the innumerable typologies and configurations a common “language” begins to surface.  In order to analyze the  language of these objects and spaces, the idea of Différance— a key aspect of deconstruction theory— was adopted. Différance, meaning both a difference and an act of deferring, says one should analyze the binaries inherent to the language-system.

 The collection explores a coalescence of these seemingly binary principles and their relationships. Although the pieces appear disparate and quirky, they share a subtle dialogue through materiality, processes and ideas

The first object explores the binary of intended and appropriated use.

The piece was envisioned as a single form that can serve dual functions, each aiding the other.


When oriented vertically, each individual profile dictates how that particular shelf is used, drawing from the specific ways in which street vendors store and display individual items.The form can be re-oriented when required to serve as a bench, with a floating panel to hold objects.

This second piece explored the binary of mobile and stationary objects, interpreted as the most rudimentary form of seating, the stool. 

In the upright orientation the five casters hitting the ground work against each other and the volume sits extremely stable, and functions as a stool.

On tugging the chain, the stool tips over and is made mobile as only three of the fifteen wheels make contact with the ground.
 The handle is housed in a cedar wood volume that ties the mobile object to the space it occupies and questions further the idea of mobility and staticity.

The third object explores the binary of massive and lightweight elements.A vinyl mesh, a surface that through its translucency only alludes to material, was held in tension by a massive cedar wood volume.  The lightweight and massive elements each depend on each other in the relationship between suspension and tension, playing with the manner in which this relationship exists within the objects and spaces of the vendors.The volume holding the whole structure down in tension is the same as the one that has been hollowed out from the central shelf, playing with the idea of mass and voids.

Designed and built as a collaboration, between Nush Farzaan Wadia and Aileen De La Ree Valencia, the ButtonBack Chair was an exploration in materiality, form and ergonomics.





Crafted from eight quarter Cherry, with an asymmetric form, undulating surfaces, a sole armrest and solid-wood seat and back, the goal of the design was to defy ideas and standards of aesthetics and comfort.

The structure relies on two stretchers, which, together with the front panel, side leg,  and back leg, make up the chair’s frame. The primary stretcher runs between the front panel and back leg, and the secondary ties the armrest to the primary stretcher.



The back and armrest are connected to the frame with dowels, while the seat is dry-fastened to the stretchers and front panel.

We mocked-up the initial profiles and proportions to test for form and ergonomics. While the overall composition of elements suited our aesthetic goals, we realized that the seat and back would need to be dished to suit the contours of the body better.The volume of the lumber gave us the flexibility and freedom to carve it into the organic, “imperfect” form it took on, embracing the knots in the wood, the undulations of the surface, and accentuating the grain.

The back was carved out using the CNC in order to ensure that the profile of the back rest was perfectly shaped to receive one’s back.

The individual elements were then glued together.

The chair gets its name from the four Maple ornaments that were added to the back to break the monotony of the Cherry wood. This along with the armrest are the only two elements that were made in Maple to contrast the warmth and visual weight of the Cherry, making lighter accents.

The surfaces were meticulously carved and each undulation was made while keeping in mind its role within the whole composition.

The result was a chair that looked stunning in its “imperfections”, comfortable on the eyes and even more so to sit it.

We mocked-up the initial profiles and proportions to test for form and ergonomics. While the overall composition of elements suited our aesthetic goals, we realized that the seat and back would need to be dished to suit the contours of the body better.The volume of the lumber gave us the flexibility and freedom to carve it into the organic, “imperfect” form it took on, embracing the knots in the wood, the undulations of the surface, and accentuating the grain.

The back was carved out using the CNC in order to ensure that the profile of the back rest was perfectly shaped to receive one’s back.

The individual elements were then glued together.

The chair gets its name from the four Maple ornaments that were added to the back to break the monotony of the Cherry wood. This along with the armrest are the only two elements that were made in Maple to contrast the warmth and visual weight of the Cherry, making lighter accents.

The surfaces were meticulously carved and each undulation was made while keeping in mind its role within the whole composition.

The result was a chair that looked stunning in its “imperfections”, comfortable on the eyes and even more so to sit it.

Questions on the relationship of form, function and the roles of ornamentation led to the design of this coffee table for my first woodworking class. The design presents a coffee table in poplar wood with five legs, each having a groove that allows the top to slide into place. Each of these legs is connected to a system of stretchers hold the table together with a tenon-mortise.

A sixth, seemingly non-functional leg in cherry stands out from the rest. This darker, heavier leg draws the viewers attention first despite having no “real function” and can only do as good as mimicking the others. An unattached ornamental cube gives the appearance that the leg penetrates through the top and the motif on this cube depicts the tenon-mortise joinery that is integral to holding the table together.


What role does the Tenon-Mortise now play? What does it act as?

Designed and executed to be placed within a corner of my own apartment, the ISST (Indian Standard Side Table) is named as such for the construction-warom.

Occupying a corner by the window, the design integrates a lamp and side-table into one unifying form while simultaneously serving as a shelf to place my tea and ashtray while seated on my beanbag looking outside.

The design drew from elements and surfaces that one would typically find dotting an urban street and charging it with activity and interaction.

The language for the two different finishes also echoed the Mumbai streets. An epoxy primer coat known locally as “astar” was used to grant a subtler blue-grey finish seen commonly on the telephone and electrical boxes through the city.

 

Aluminum based paint that the street lights of Mumbai are coated with was used for the base and the post of the lamp.

1. An L-angle welded to the top ensured that it sat snugly in place while still being easily removable. 



2. The top was carved to include a holder for a removable ashtray fashioned out of a steel cup often used by roadside-vendors. The hanging detail is reminiscent of water buckets that are hung outside cigarette shops known as paan-pattis.



3. The fixing detail for the hollow section with a hollow stud allowing for the wiring to pass through.



4. The lamp shade was simply rest upon two Saddle clamps typically used for plumbing work.



5. Stickers made by local artists as well as my own were added to reference the advertisements and posters stuck on that are vital to the character of the object

Produced for a wealthy Mumbai business-family, the furniture collection took on a design that shouted simplicity and refinement yet showcased the raw and contrasting characteristics of the material. 





The set consists of 3 pieces: two side tables in cast brass and one in oakwood.





Working closely with the craftsmen that work with cast brass, we developed a unique method from the making of the form-work for the sand to the ultimately contrasting finishes that the table top and legs have.

The design utilizes a single, elegant fixing detail between the cast top and the legs.

The process saw a rigorous and extensive exploration in materiality and finishes that permitted us to fine tune and perfect the final outcome with a great deal of accuracy.

	1. In order to achieve the irregular form and textured surface for the coffee and side tables, a plywood and wax form-work was made that would be used to create a mold during sand-casting.
2. The form-work was then used to create multiple moulds for sand-casting and parts that were to be duplicated.
3. The casts were then shot blasted to eliminate the inconsistencies in the surface and obtain a more even texture with coarser grain.4. The tops were then machined and leveled in order to achieve the narrow tapering edge and then buffed and scrubbed with an oxidizing agent to obtain the pattinated finish.
